Winter Cruising in Chile
Published 18 years ago, updated 6 years ago
We’re in Puerto Montt having done a winter trip up through the Chilean channels. We found that the weather really was much better for coming north in winter – MUCH less wind than in summer (due to the Pacific High drifting north as promised), though cold of course. Though the days were short, we could use all of the daylight hours as there also wasn’t the afternoon rachas that are common in summer. We had ice in only 3 anchorages and were prevented from entering only one anchorage due to thick ice (another ice-free anchorage was only 5 miles further along the channel). The Italian Guidebook was excellent. Truly the best we’ve used in all our years of cruising and a wonderful souvenir to keep of our trip.
