Warning: New Tuna Nets South of Faro
Tuna nets on anyone’s course if they are sailing from anywhere west of Faro to anywhere east of Faro, including Cadiz and the Strait of Gibraltar.

There has been a recent development this last summer in the form of some new Tuna nets south of Faro. These are not to be confused with the Tuna nets south of Fuseta which have now been there for several years.
The new ones with their position marked by the buoys shown below are directly on anyone’s course if they are sailing from anywhere west of Faro to anywhere east of Faro, including Cadiz and the Strait of Gibraltar. The yellow special marks are lit but not very bright, I, therefore, recommend that people should plan to go south of the south cardinal buoy.
There is a brand new area of tuna nets south of Cabo St Maria they are marked with a total of 4 special mark buoys and one South Cardinal as follows:
Special Mark No 1. 36º 56’.05 N 007º 56’.94 W
Special Mark No 2. 36º 56’.90 N 007º 56’.63 W
Special Mark No 3. 36º 56’.93 N 007º 55’.52 W
Special Mark No 4 36º 56’.08 N 007º 55’.17 W
South Cardinal marked as S.Maria Sul CPA 36º 55’.58 N 007º 55’.97 W
All 5 buoys are large (about 3 metres high) the special marks are lit as is the S Cardinal and all are powered with solar panels.
