USA East Coast: Covid19 Field Report

A useful summary of what services marinas are currently offering between Washington DC and Mystic CT.

Published 5 years ago

I completed a delivery last week between Washington DC and Mystic CT.

We started before mandatory stay-at-home orders and were off the Chesapeake before Gov. Hogan explicitly prohibited recreational boating in Maryland Waters. Gov. Northam followed suit in Virginia. The Chesapeake is closed to recreational boating.

During fuel planning we contacted a large number of marinas. Some are still open for fuel ONLY. None that we contacted had either water or pump-out at the fuel docks.

Some specific high points:

  • National Harbor Marina in Fort Washington MD has skeleton crew and is open for fuel. Water can be arranged in advance but you’ll have to move off the fuel dock.
  • Calvert Marina in Solomons MD is open for fuel.
  • Annapolis Landing Marina is closed, including the fuel dock.
  • Annapolis City Marina is open for fuel. They have contracts with the city, state, and I think Federal government for marine fuel so I expect this to continue.
  • Frank S. Farley State Marina in Atlantic City is closed for fuel; this was quite a surprise as their 24/7 self-serve fuel dock would seem perfect for current conditions but all the equipment on the fuel dock is shrink-wrapped.
  • Kammerman’s Marina in Atlantic City is open for fuel. Ship’s store is open; they’ll bring desired product to your boat. Owner’s live on site and fuel can be arranged by calling ahead 24/7. Otherwise open normal hours. Fuel nozzles are sanitized after each use.
  • Atlantic Highlands Municipal Harbor is open for fuel.
  • Liberty Landing Marina is open for fuel and will take transients; good social distancing practices.
  • Noank Shipyard is closed.
  • Seaport Marine (same ownership as Noank Shipyard) is mostly closed which is unfortunate as that was our destination; the boat owner pointed out he had just paid his annual slip fee and would be happy to have it back – we managed to make arrangements.

We got a rental car to return to Annapolis. Stopped by law enforcement several times who accepted that we were headed home to quarantine. Enterprise Rental Car quarantined our CT rental car for three days before a third-party hazmat company sanitized it.

We’re all self-quarantined at home, taking temperatures twice each day.
