Updates for Port Salalah

Published 12 years ago, updated 6 years ago

There have been no transiting yachts in Salalah for a year and a half because of piracy fears. No local yachting community here at all. Salalah is purely a commercial port, no pontoon or services for yachts.

Since 2 years ago, ALL vessels approaching Salalah port have to have an agent appointed prior to entering the port, otherwise, they are not allowed to proceed in. Agency fees differ from agent-to-agent and range from USD $100 – $300 per yacht.

Muhammed is no longer an agent, however, he is employed with the port and can help with advice/suggestions if contacted.

Other Fees

(Sail yacht 15m LOA in March 2013)

  • Port charge: $290
  • Port clearance: $26
  • Health/Customs/Immigration:  $117
  • Bunker permit:  $26
  • Water (claimed potable): $5 /cbm
  • Gate (in/out port) pass per person: $50
  • Diesel (fuel) per litre: $1.016

Fuel

The price of diesel is set by Salalah Port Authority. It is difficult to get it supplied in quantities less than 1000 litres. One has to wait days until small orders have accumulated.

At the petrol pump (2 km from the port gate) the diesel is $0.45, however gate security does not allow even 2 canisters to come inside. Somebody told me it could be smuggled into the port area, but only in quantities up to 100 ltrs – usually by a friendly agent in his car. However, he will ask $0.75 per litre usually.

Ashore

Provisions are good in town 10-15 km away ($45 both ways). There are 2 supermarkets for all basic needs in the port itself – however with less choice.

The people are friendly here.
