Turkey Antifouling Regs. – a question

We recently heard a rumor of boats entering Turkey having their bottoms tested for signs of TBT based antifouling, and being fined if they test positive. Is this true?

Many boats have coats of paint on their boat that can date back for many years. If they haven’t taken all their paint off, TBT residue could possibly be found. Any info on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Good morning:

I would be willing to bet 99 to 1 that this is nothing more than a rumor. I have been in Turkey for over 12 years and cannot imagine anything like this happening here. The Turkish authorities have a lot to worry about and the chemical makeup of the anti-fouling used on a yacht is likely to be very far down on their “to do” list.

Cheers
