Santorini Update – August 2011

We sailed/motored to Santorini (Thira) from Ios, not knowing if we would get into the “marina” on the south of the island.
We called 24 hours ahead to see if space was available. They could not give a definite answer. From 1 hour away, we called again. They asked for the length of our boat and the draft in feet and in meters. We draw 2.1 meters and we received the go-ahead to enter the “marina”.
The outer yellow buoy is easily visible and the approach is not difficult. 2.3 meters is the depth of the entrance. They will not let you enter if your draft is too great.
The Vlikahda marina is really a fishing village. The tripper boats are catamarans that use the harbour as a base for tours around the island. B’sheret is 37 feet and we were charged 15 euros per night. This includes free electricity, free wi-fi & free water. The water is not potable. Bottled water is cheap and readily available.
Rent a car for 35 euros or an ATV (the way to get around) is 35-45 euros. We zipped around the island on our ATV in 1 day and had a great time.
Sailing thru the caldera is something very special. Santorini is simply a beautiful island that should be on your list to see.
