Pohnpei Information Update

Update from John March 2012

A few boats recently have experienced difficulty with Immigration and Customs, mostly because the yachts have not cooperated with the officials. Complaining to officials about procedures anywhere in the world does not endear you to said officials. This is true in Pohnpei, too. The officials expect boats to follow the rules. Writing with suggestions for improved service is a good idea, but after the fact. Most of the yachts coming here this season have complimented the entry procedures.

The dock at Rumors is unsafe, but cruisers can tie up near the shore, just be careful with the ramp, as it is extremely slippery. There is no longer water or toilets available for public use at Rumors. However, jerry jugs can be filled with water at the Ranahans’ at the bottom of the hill.

There are now a few moorings available in the harbor (check with the owner of the South Park Hotel if his dinghy operator doesn’t contact you when you come into anchor).

Larry Adams (Ace Hardware) is offering hauling facilities (a 50-ton crane will lift boats up to @25 tons) and some storage along the causeway to the airport. According to the first boat hauled, the price is reasonable and the crane operation an excellent one.

Peter Shirkey (920-2574) does good work on engines, refrigeration, and electrical work.
