This 295-page book is subtitled “A Celebration of Britain’s Maritime Heritage” and covers the whole of mainland Britain, The Orkneys, Fair Isle, The Shetlands, The Hebrides and the Isle of Man, in seven sections, starting at Cape Wrath in Scotland and proceeding clockwise around the coast.

Each section covers an interesting selection of attractions, places or preserved artefacts relating to the sea. It is illustrated with a wide range of clear, attractive photographs and also includes occasional coloured panels detailing the history of something relating to a particular locale i.e. Arbroath smokies, fishermen’s ganseys of Cromer, or the wreckers of Cornwall. The last couple of pages of a section is devoted to a gazetteer giving addresses, phone numbers, websites and opening times of the various attractions.

This handy sized book is very readable and would be a very pleasant way of passing the non-sailing days of the winter and a very useful addition to the boat’s bookshelf if doing around Britain cruise.
