We cleared out of Tanjung Pandan, Belitung for Kumai on 10 January 2016.

We took the opportunity to visit all three offices (though we didn’t need to go to Customs and Immigration) to find out their knowledge about the change in CAIT rules.

All the officials we talked to were aware that a CAIT was no longer needed.

At the Harbour Master office, they kindly provided us with a copy of the official notification memorandum. This may be of use to those travelling to other areas that may not have received the news. (For example, we just cleared out in Kumasi, and through the Harbour Master official we spoke with was aware that a CAIT was not required, he said he had not received official notice).

The Tanjung Pandan Harbour Master also gave us a copy of the Cruising Declaration Form which yachts must complete when clearing in. However, Customs told us that there is now an online system for yachts. They gave us the following websites and said that yachts should visit both:

We just cleared out of Indonesia in Kumai and, as in Belitung, everyone was extremely helpful. We checked out on a Saturday when most offices were closed to the public, but the officials let us clear out anyway. It was “Wives Day” at the Harbour Master’s office (the wives get together from various governmental branches) and they fed us lunch while we waited for our paperwork!  And, though it was Saturday, we were never asked for any bribes or overtime fees. There were “NO TIPPING” signs on the desks at the Customs office.

Though a lot of waiting is sometimes involved, in this part of Indonesia, officials have been very easy to work with.

We hope this information will be useful to yachts arriving in 2016 and afterwards.

Editor’s Note: Read carefully the latest news item about the new CIQP rules in Indonesia (link below). Whilst it was announced that the new rules were now in place, in actual fact the online system has not been properly tested and there are still many ports that are not aware it is functioning.
