Michelle and Maik have sailed more than 7000 nautical miles with two beagles onboard their 43-foot steel ketch Seefalke, crossing the Baltic, the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean to reach South America. In this delightful book they share an abundance of tips on how to plan, prepare and enjoy safe sailing with your dog on board, enough to give any pet owner confidence in casting off the lines with their four-legged friend on board.

The book deals with a number of topics including exercise on board, first aid at sea, establishing routines, making your boat pet-friendly, safety, extreme temperatures and traveling by air – plus much more.

Each chapter has a useful summary for easy reference and there are lots of helpful links to external sources of information as well as to articles on the Seefalke blog.

The delicate subject of potty training and how your dog does its “business” on board is covered in great detail with amusing snippets from Michelle and Maik’s own struggles in getting their beagles to decide on a place to go.

At the end of the book is a list of comprehensive pet formalities required if cruising to countries in Europe, NW Africa, Atlantic South America, the Caribbean and North America. Formalities can be a daunting task for pet owners but predominantly it’s just a matter of getting organized in advance and this concise information will help greatly.

Having sailed with my own dog several times, many of the issues raised in this book have come up at one time or another and I am encouraged to read it is possible to potty train your pet on board. We will keep working on it! Much of enjoying time afloat with your dog is a matter of trial and error, however, this book will go a long way to ease the transition from land to sea for pet owners, as well as being a valuable source of reference for life on board with a four-legged friend.
