Croatia Cruising Notes
Published 13 years ago, updated 6 years ago
We have just left Croatia recently after spending a little over 3 weeks here. Here follow a few notes that may be useful for other cruisers.
Tips
Cell phone Sim Card: .01Euro/min for international calls.
Dongle Sim Card: VIP – Good coverage (1 month 1Gig = 70 Kuna).
Propane: We filled our US Tanks at “Proplin” LPG facility in Ston. $20USD for 2 tanks to be filled. Anchor by plastics factory (43 32N 16 26E) and walk to Proplin.
Diesel: We filled our tanks in Korcula at the fuel dock (8.92 Kuna/litre).
Provisioning: Decent grocery stores in most towns & excellent bakeries everywhere.
Yacht Services: Split/Trogir had facilities: Sail loft (Elvstrom), mechanical repair, small chandleries. Korcula also had a few services and a small chandlery.
A few anchorage notes below:
We never went to a dock or used a mooring & were never asked for fees in any anchorages we went to. A few places though did ask other boats for fees, but never came to our boat.
Dubrovnik – Anchored outside the walled city (42 38.4N 18 07.1E). A few boats were asked for an anchoring fee – no one came to our boat. We cleared in from around the bay in Gruz (tied up to the wharf by ferries). If coming from Greece, do not plan to check in anywhere north of Cavtat or Dubrovnik – they fined a yacht 200USD for checking into Split & not stopping in Cavtat or Dubrovnik first. (See another report on Split Clearance here).
Ston – Anchored by town (42 50.1N 17 41.8E). Walked through town and when we came back to boat Port Captain & police would not let us anchor – he wanted us on the dock for a fee. We left and anchored in the bay (42 49.2N 17 43.4E). This was the only place we were hassled – but the police were less than courteous.
Cavtat – Anchored in Tiha bay(42 34.9N 18 13.2E). No fees. Bus to Cilipi for the church – traditional dancing and hiked on the trail back to Anchorage. We cleared out of Cavtat – have to go to the Q dock in town – reason unknown, but otherwise painless and fortunately no additional fees to leave.
Korcula – Anchored by Missionary (42 57.1N 17 09.7E). Dinghy about a mile to Korcula town. They charge to anchor (a ridiculous 40 euros) in the bay near Korcula (42 57.3N 17 08.5E).
Luka Tiha – Nice quiet anchorages – Stern tied (43 13.08N 16 33.41E). Good protection & can do a day trip to Stari Grad – which was one of our favourite Croatian towns. In Stari Grad can either do a long dingy ride from Luka Tiha or take a boat and use mooring ball for morning/afternoon before they come around asking for mooring fee.
Luka Prozura (MiJet) – Anchored/Stern tied (42 44.03N 17 39.3E). There are also a few mooring balls for the restaurants here. Nice quiet bay & not much on shore except a couple of restaurants.
Trogir – (43 31.15N 16 16.43E) We spent one night here after going into town for provisions – decent grocery store and great fruit/veg market in town. A few yacht services here as well. We heard from other boats that they tried asking for anchoring fee – which no one paid, but no one came and asked us. Water is shallow and filthy.
Split – (43 31.04N 16 25.3E) Nice & Easy walk into the old town of Split walking through the neighbourhoods to the historic areas. A small grocery store close by & chandlery in a local marina.
Borovac Islands off Hvar – (43 09.61N 16 25.0E) Can dinghy to Hvar town. Stern tied here. Lots of traffic here & poor holding. Not our favourite.
I think these cover most of the places we went. Hope it helps!
