Costa Rica, Gulf of Dulce, Cabo Matapalo: Harassed by Fishing Boat – March 2013

Report obtained from http://groups.yahoo.com/group/southbound_group/ .

Around 7:30 pm while anchored off of ‘Backwash’ beach near Cabo Matapalo at the western end of Gulfo Dulce, I hear a boat approaching and voices outside.

When I got to the cockpit there was a fishing vessel (not a ponga, but one of the larger ones with a superstructure) holding onto my dingy painter and asking for a little bit of water. I was a little uneasy about the situation, as it was after dark, I was alone and they had several men on board, but I told them one moment and went below to fill a container with water.

After returning to the cockpit, I gave them the water. They then proceeded to maneuver their bow perpendicular to the cockpit. As the swell caused the boats to go up and down their bow was slamming into my teak cap rail causing damage. They were asking for ‘batteries’ and I was losing my cool and shouting at them to leave. As a second man came up on their bow, I grabbed my camera with a bright flash and started snapping photos. This really upset them, as I heard them say ‘camera’ several times, and they hastily departed, nearly running over my dingy.
