Corruption at Safi
Published 13 years ago, updated 6 years ago
Following a visit to Safi on the 3rd March 2012, this is a note to relate our experiences.
- There is no charge for berthing a cruising yacht in this port.
- Fuel can be brought to the boat – the locals basically insist on an illegal payment in euros and will charge about 50% more than pump prices and demand a present.
- The most corrupt official when we visited was the postmaster – he demanded the ship’s papers and retained them until we paid him 25 euros. He has no right to either retain papers or to demand any payment.
- The police and customs were honest and efficient, dealing with paperwork courteously and efficiently (well an hour each).
With the experienced level of corruption, I would not leave a vessel unattended here and would remain in this Port for as little time as possible.
