Comments on Salvador, Brazil

Salvador, in our opinion, is the only port we have been to in Brazil that we would advise people to avoid.
Crime is rife especially in the “tourist” area of Pelourino, despite extra policing. We were hit in an assault where they shoved my husband grabbing a chain from his neck before running off. Despite the fact, it was hidden under his shirt! They had obviously followed us. Giving chase, don’t expect any help. I was screaming for help and police and no one responded. The people the thief ran past did nothing. The many police were suddenly absent and not one of them appeared to see what the commotion was about. Amazing considering there are two on just about every corner.
The two things that have not been given enough praise and promotion in Salvador is, firstly, Pier Salvador. What a pleasure to arrive there. One is met and helped to moor. Complimentary fresh juice is served as you settle. Sandoval the owner is most charming and helpful and his staff friendly and efficient. Nothing is too much trouble for Sandoval. Any boating needs and in fact any assistance he goes above and beyond the call of duty to assist you.
The second is actually in Itaparica and not Salvador, but it is the best and only good part of Salvador in my opinion. That is Amigos BBQ. Willem and Robin serve an excellent meal their chicken is to die for. They offer free wifi onboard to their customers and of course, the beer is ice cold. Nearby at Pousada Muito Muis Natalie makes chocolate that can’t be missed.
But Salvador is a great disappointment following the most wonderful experiences over the last 6 months everywhere else in Brazil.
