Bringing your pet into Hawaii is easier than ever

Published 14 years ago, updated 6 years ago

Long gone are the days when bringing your pet into Hawaii was having to suffer through 60+ days without your best friend. Today the 5 days or less program is tried and tested. It works well.

Get started at least 4-5 months ahead of time. Get in touch with a vet from the agriculture department so you have a contact person early on to help navigate the paperwork. The requirements appear more complicated than they really so ask for clarification and discuss options with your contact.

We decided to make landfall at Hilo Port on The Big Island because we had heard really good things both about the quality and organization of the customs officials and the Vet/Inspector who clears your pet in. Everything we heard proved to be correct. They were efficient, professional and helpful. The harbor is safe and welcoming.

Our dog was cleared and free to wonder about within 12 hours of arrival (we came from French Polynesia but the requirements are the same no matter what country your pet comes from).

Most importantly, do not read the requirements and assume the worse. Speak to your agriculture department contact to see if there is a way to work around any problems you perceive. Having your pet in Hawaii is worth it!
