Brazil Finally Allows Extended Stay For Yachts
Published 18 years ago, updated 6 years ago
With leadership from the Bahia government, the Brazilian government has finally changed the regulations applicable to the length of stay permitted to foreign boats. Previously boats received the same treatment as tourists, ie the legal length of stay of 90 + 90 days. This has been changed by Decree number 5887 passed by the President in September 2006, allowing boats to stay in marinas, for as long as 2 years. From September 2006 crew will follow the 90 + 90-day rule while boats can stay for up 2 years.

NOTE: This law covers the boat only. There is no change to the immigration restrictions for the crew. A person can still only stay in Brazil for a maximum of 180 days in a year.
This is not what the cruising community expected or was advised would be the situation. In effect after 180 days ,you will have to leave your boat in Brazil for 180 days until you can obtain a new visa. Perhaps someone just forgot about the crew?
