Almeria, San Jose: Not to be recommended for any length of stay
Published 12 years ago, updated 6 years ago
Here is a brief report & warning of the San Jose Harbour in south-east Spain, Mediterranean.
We arrived in this small attractive-looking harbour in the beginning of November. Helpful staff showed as a berth with mooring lines standard AB mooring. Everything was fine in the beginning.
Then came a west/southwest wind offshore, gusting 40 knots. The harbour became extremely uncomfortable and our boat heeled frequently almost 15 degrees. Mooring lines held, but it was very close that we did not destroy the boat on our leeward side.
A warning here is that by looking at the harbour one cannot really tell how the w/SW offshore wind hits it. San Jose is surrounded by quite high hills close to shore, and one might expect them to shelter the harbour well. Actually, it is very much the opposite. The hills seem to produce terrible offshore gusting wind.
Other issues with San Jose are extremely high prices (37 euros/night off-season for 40-foot monohull), no drinking water, and very bad and cramped toilet facilities, not to mention 9 euros for a gin & tonic in the small bar in the harbour.
All in all, we definitely cannot recommend San Jose for any length of stay for anybody.
