Advice Against Sending Parcels Into Egypt

Published 17 years ago, updated 6 years ago

Several cruising boats who have had essential parts sent to them in Egypt have had to pay large sums to “agents” in order to get possession of the items. One boat had to pay $230.00 for a $70.00 watermaker pump. We paid $180.00 for one parcel from the US and $140 for two smaller ones. All packages were clearly marked “yacht in transit” and “replacement parts” which we were told were the keywords to use in order to avoid paying duty. No duty was charged, but the agents (who claim to be collecting customs fees) seem to have free reign as far as determining their fees, and cruisers who need these parts have no choice but to pay. We would strongly suggest not ordering parts into Egypt unless you are desperate.
