A friend of mine, a Nicaraguan national, just opened a new marina in Corinto. corintomarina.com It is close to the bridge connecting to the mainland, from there it’s a new highway 20k to Chinandega City. Fuel and supplies are readily available. Customs and emigration are right at the port and they are quick, effective and reasonable. The total cost of clearing it is around US$25.

The marina is just starting out but has a dinghy dock, a boat ramp, 24-hour security, a van to help with supplies. Fuel can be arranged from nearby service stations but the marina keeps eighty gallons on hand for guests. It’s a great location. The owner is a lawyer and also owns the biggest tannery in Central America.. The property has a compound wall with life in staff. Transportation is cheap and plentiful to Chinandega where you can find almost everything you need.

There is a haul out facility at the port that is available for emergency repairs that can accommodate most sailboats. Rates for mooring is to low to mention. The owner and staff are trying to put Corinto Marina on the map by giving the best professional service available on the coast. there is a small clubhouse with shower and amenities and some first-class secure storage areas for your dinghy and equipment should you need to leave your boat for long periods.

I have managed marinas and sailed the Caribbean for many years and this place is a find. It’s up to the river and all the boats coming and going, even dinghies, have to pass and check into the coast guard station, it is a very safe anchorage. I am living down the coast right now and find that boat related crime is the lowest I have experienced so far anywhere in my travels.

PS: Corinto Marina is still under construction and promises to become the premium marina on this coast. Once the word gets out among the cruisers, Corinto will be a destination and not just a fuel and supply stop.
