Project Manaia’s mission is to organize a number of events in Mediterranean countries bringing together sailors and local communities to help with the environmental impact of the high tourist season: Beach cleanups; underwater cleanups; workshops and presentations.

Cruising sailors are invited to join the team and support the project.

The Mediterranean Sea has been supporting multiple civilizations since humanity was first introduced. It is an important transport vessel connecting different cultures and helping them co-evolve. Up to this day, it is very important for multiple economies and many communities are directly dependent on it. Huge impacts and changes have been observed in the past decades. Climate change, pollution, tourism, and fisheries have been some of the high influencing factors. Recorded data report that the effects have been greater than in any other body of water in the world. That could be explained by its unique geography, with the enclosed shape and the many bordering countries responsible for the decisions around the Sea.

Mediterranean countries have been trying their best to preserve this natural gem. During the high tourist season (Up to 30% of global tourism visits the Mediterranean region every year), countries like Greece have to deal with enormous numbers of visitors. The tourist population can be up to 5 times higher than the locals in the islands. As we can imagine during those times sustainability is not prioritised. The seasonal workers try their best to keep up with the high standards keeping the visitors pleased. Simultaneously recycling is challenging due to the distance of the islands from the mainland which is the main recycling point in the country.
