Kirkwall - General Info
Where is Kirkwall?
This is the capital of the Orkneys, an archipelago of 70 islands best explored by boat. It is situated on the northern side of East Mainland. The name Kirkwall comes from the Norse name Kirkjuvágr meaning Church Bay and was the site of an ancient Norse town founded approximately 1000 years ago. Today, it is a transport hub with ferries to many locations.
Entrance Notes and Cautions:
Kirkwall can be approached from the north-west through Eynhallow Sound, from the north through Vasa Sound, and from the east through Shapinsay Sound and the String. Perches and buoys mark the Skerries (shallow areas) but there are off track hazards, particularly in the northern approaches. Final approach is with St Magnus Cathedral bearing 190degT which at night is the white sector of Kirkwall’s Pierhead light.
The harbour is a very busy ferry terminal, fishing port and cruise liner destination. While there is lots of room in the harbour beware of shoals if going inside the outer pier.
Cruiser Highlights:
The Orkney Islands are an exciting cruising destination with an abundance of wildlife, history and outstanding coastal scenery to be enjoyed. Fresh local produce is available from many of the shops in the town centre. For those who like a “tipple”, Highland Park and Scapa Distilleries, the most northerly whisky distilleries in Britain, are within walking distance of the marina.
