Karaca (Gulf of Gokova) - General Info

Description:

This very attractive, tree-lined and sheltered little bay (also known as English Harbour because of its use as a base by the British Special Squadron in 1944/45 during WWII) is tucked away on the southern shore at the east end of the Gulf of Gokova Korfezi.

It had become a popular place to over-winter, however, the bay now closes when the Turkish President is in residence at his nearby palace.

It is definitely worth trying to enter as you might be lucky, however, if the President is in residence you will be turned away by the Navy and Coast Guard ships patrolling the area.

Position:

36° 56.82’N, 28° 11.36’E (bay entrance)

This is an amazing small bay that is open to yachts and gulets when the Turkish President is not in residence at his nearby palace. We tried 3 times last year to enter but were turned away by the Navy and Coast Guard ships patrolling the area. However now (May 2024) we’ve finally been able to anchor in the wonderful tree lined and peaceful and very protected bay – once home to the British SBS in WWII.

Reported by Marmaris Bay Cruisers (https://cruisingtips.net/mbc/):

Parts of Gökova Bay are now closed off. Okluk Bay-Değirmen Bükü – English Harbour area – inside the Bay will be closed. During the past summer the Bay was closed a few times for a short time. But as of now, Okluk Bay-Değirmen Bükü area will be closed for sailing all the time.

A campaign has been started via change.org to re-open these areas – http://chng.it/t4YhFT6G
