La Coruna - General Info

Description:

This is one of the best harbors for shelter on the Costa da Morte. It is also a very interesting and useful port of call and a convenient place to leave the boat to explore inland.. It does get very busy in high season, however, in particular when a cruise ship is in town.

La Coruna is situated in the Golfo Artabro, which also includes the smaller ports (further east) of Sada, Ares and Ferrol. There are numerous pretty anchorages in the area.

La Coruna is usually the initial destination for yachts crossing Biscay and the launch point for long cruises north or southbound.

Entrance Notes and Cautions:

Easy access once you round the long outer breakwater (even in storm conditions). Swell can cause alot of surge in Marina Coruna – Marina Real offers better protection. Strong mooring lines and fenders recommended.

Cruiser Highlights:

Good marina facilities; English speaking staff; popular transit port for cruisers; short pleasant walk to the city centre; attractive old town with narrow streets; Torre de Hércules (the world’s oldest
lighthouse); great bars and restaurants; good communications; airport; excellent provisioning; very good chandlery and repair facilities.

Position:

43° 23.1’N, 08° 22.33’W (entrance to Ria da Coruna)

I stayed for a few days at Marina Coruna in August 2022, waiting for wind. Friendly, helpful English speaking staff. Good facilities (laundry, showers,…). Prices reasonable. Easy access (even in storm conditions I should think, once you round the long outer breakwater). Very modern, broad catways. A short pleasant walk to the city centre, the old town just next door, or to Torre de Hércules, the world’s oldest lighthouse.
HOWEVER, be aware that even a very small swell (which is probably reflecting all around the bay) causes terrible tugging and squeaking on mooring lines, making sleep difficult. With a swell that was barely visible, I was miserable after a while. So, a good place to leave your boat (if you have strong mooring lines and good fenders), but you would be better off in the almost totally enclosed Marina Real nearby if you want to sleep well.

We stayed at Marina Coruna in June 2022. All good. Friendly, helpful English speaking staff.

The Jefatura Superior Policia (Police HQ) is the place to get stamped in and out. Open each morning from about 09:30 to 14:30. This is a 20 min walk along the seafront from Marina Coruna.

A charming lady handles the process. You need no documents apart from your passports. The skipper has to fill out a simple crew list form.

All very easy and simple. The passport stamp is dated from the day you pitch up at the police station, not the day of your arrival.

This is superbly helpful information. It is also reassuring as checking in or out in a number of ports/ countries is a real pain, with the authorities often acting like its all new to them! Thanks.

We Stayed few days at Marina Real. The staff Ana and Iago are very Friendly and helpful. The location of the marina is few steps away from the city center. Juan can help if you need a sail to be repaired.
You better make a phone call in advance to make sure there is some space available.

Stayed at Marina Real in the heart of the city, very friendly, fantastic location. A great place city to explore, had 32amp and 16amp connections, its always good to have both a 16amp and 32amp plug fittings for shore power. It is possible to swap gas bottles at Marina Coruna just down the road.

The green (starboard) buoy about 290⁰ (white sector) from the Ponta Cera lighthouse, about north from mid of the breakwater, is nearly invisible at day from afar as it is a grid buoy (no good contrast). From North, you proceed straight south towards Torre de Hercules until you’re in the line defined by the leading lights on Punta Mera, then towards them until you have passed that green buoy. Now you can head towards the end of the breakwater.

Marina Sada. We stayed here during the winter ‘16-‘17. A welcoming harbour with kind and helpful staff. Good facilities as well in the harbour as on the hard. Good Mercadona supermarket behind the Harbour Office and different shops in town within walking distance. Frequent and cheap buses to La Coruña.

Marina Coruna had friendly staff, all facilities incl. fuel pontoon with diesel and petrol. Laundry had washing machines only, dryers removed. Wifi very slow/overloaded (July high season). NW swell entered the marina despite additional breakwaters in front of it, mooring springs or snubbers advisable.

A large town with plenty of restaurants but incredibly busy, especially when cruise ship in port. Try Helateria Colon on the seafront for the best ice cream and sit in the nearby park to eat it.

    Marina Coruna.

Offers CA members a discount on berthing. Call the marina on channel 9 before approaching and they will guide you to a berth and help with your lines. Pontoons are numbered, no letters and can’t be seen until moored up. Rubbish and recycling bins available but not labelled very well.

There is no chandlery in this marina. The nearest is at Pombo Avda. Primo de Rivera, 8, 15006 A Coruña. You can catch number 1A bus from the marina to take you there or it’s 6 euros in a taxi. Phone: (34) 981 245 432
