Where is Taro?

Taro Island is located in Choiseul Bay, off the northwest coast of the much larger Choiseul island. It is the provincial capital of Choiseul Province. This island is the Solomons’ northern-most island and lies southeast of Bougainville Island, which is part of Papua New Guinea, and north of Noro on the New Georgia islands. Before WWII, all of Taro Island was a coconut plantation.

Taro Cruiser Highlights

  • This is a recommended port of entry for yacht crew, as is Noro (New Georgia Island, Western Province). Clearance fees, however, will need to be paid in Noro as there is no ATM here.
  • Taro Island is home to Taro Airport (CHY) with flights to Gozo and other places in the Solomon Islands.
  • Fuel is available here, in limited quantities.

The safest entrance is from the North passage, which is called Emerald passage.

Position:

07° 26’15″S, 157° 28’58″E (S entrance to Nggosele Channel)

    Lynda Lim says:

The small island of Ondolou south of Wagina in Choiseul’s southern reef lagoon area has had a recent crocodile attack (March 2019). The usual croc smart rules apply anywhere in the Solomons but be extra vigilant in this area- the province has much lower human populations therefore higher number of crocodiles are likely.
