Pointe des Galets (Le Port) - General Info
Description:
Located on the NW of the island, about 15km west of the capital, St Dennis. Port de la Pointe des Galets is usually referred to simply as “Le Port”.
It is an artificial harbour in the western part of Le Port area. This is an industrial area with little in the way of attractions for a visitor.
It is the ONLY port of entry on Reunion.
Cruiser Highlights:
A very French island, clean and orderly. Wait for a weather window here if crossing to Richards Bay in South Africa. Stock up on French cheeses, wine and sausages. Hire a care or use a local bus to go into the mountains of the island – well worth a visit.
Position:
20°56’10″S, 55°16’42″E (harbor entrance)

Reported by Nadire Berker & Selim Yalcin, SY Keyif, Istanbul, Turkey.
We would like to report that most, if not all, of the problems of the new marina are now resolved. There is a security guard on the premises 24 hours a day, the access to the pontoons are locked, the keys given open the pontoon doors and the toilets as well as the barrier to the car park.
No cars other than boat owners’ are allowed inside the premises. There is continuous ample hot water in the showers all the time. Lots of trash cans have been installed, and there is no trash anywhere. The marina is very clean, quiet and pleasant. Jerome is very helpful, and we could rent a car for 19 euros a day for a month with his advice.
He can also advise on the hiking trails. Walking the Cirque de Mafate is exceptional, the crater and the villages called llets are unique in the world, so plan to spend some time doing this, even if for one night only. La Reunion is a beacon of civilization in the midst of the Indian Ocean, and it is very pleasant to be here.
Reunion Island – Refrigeration at Le Port
We chanced upon a young, very competent and most importantly conscientious refrigeration technician (working for himself) in Le Port. Having become reasonably knowledgeable about refrigeration over the years, it was obvious from the start that Pierre knew his trade.
He showed great tenacity in persevering with the problem solving on our refrigeration, and all with good humour. He works with compressor and electrical refrigeration. We have no hesitation in recommending him to anyone with a marine refrigeration need.
His contact details are as follows:
