Lae - General Info

Description:

Located on Papua New Guinea’s northeast coast, opposite the island of New Britain, Lae is the second largest city in PNG but is still considered the ‘Wild West’ of the country.

Lae is a mining and transport hub and as such has an abundance of industries that can assist in yachting repairs and maintenance. The Lae Yacht Club is developing a haul-out facility (via Hydraulic Trailer) planned for some time in 2017. Yachts can be lifted by crane – however, the cost is inhibiting.

Lae has been particularly affected by the recent surge in criminality in this part of PNG and it is inadvisable to wander the streets of Lae alone, even in crowded shopping areas.

Good information on Lae is provided here.

Position:

06° 44.36′S,147° 00.48′E (marina entrance)

    Hi Lauri,
I have been in touch with the Yacht Club and they say:
“Minimum depth is 2.5 meters. We currently have 2 sailing boats moored at the marina, but mostly Power boats.”
Do please give us feedback should you visit to confirm depths experienced and any other useful info. for those following in your wake.
    Thanks
    Sue
