Where is Napier?

Napier is situated in the SW corner of Hawke’s Bay and was first sighted by British explorer Lieutenant James Cook in October 1769 when he sailed down the east coast of the North Island.  Maori tribes here were some of the first to come into contact with European settles.

The city was devastated by a major earthquake in February 1931 and the extensive rebuilding that took place is the reason for the Art Deco flavour of the city.

Entrance Notes and Cautions for Napier:

Ahuriri Inner Harbour is able to accommodate vessels and the main channel entrance is dredged to 2.5 meters at low tide.  Depths vary in the inner harbour.

Note: Cyclone Gabrielle caused major damage to the city and the region’s infrastructure in February 2023.

Cruiser Highlights for Napier:

Worth visiting for the Art Deco architecture that has been well preserved.  The area around Napier and Hastings is home to some of New Zealand’s best wine growing regions and there are many wineries worth a visit.

Napier Entrance Position:

39° 28.60’S, 176° 53.72’E (entrance to inner port)

Hi Robert. The Napier Sailing Club has a haulout/hardstand facility. There is also a commercial fishing facility on Meeanee Quay. Contact the Sailing Club through their website: https://www.napiersailingclub.org.nz/travel-lift
or check the NZ marine pests website for locations of hardstand and haulout facilities. https://www.marinepests.nz/hauling-out.
