Description:

Cabo San Lucas is a major port and tourism centre for the southern Baja peninsula. This is a great port to provision and prepare for cruising the Gulf of California or as a jumping-off point either southbound or northbound on the Pacific Coast.

There is a regular cruising rally that ends in Cabo San Lucas each year known as the Baja Ha-Ha. It departs from San Diego (California, USA) and approximately coincides with the ARC. (It is an independent organization and is not affiliated with the WCC.)

Cabo San Lucas is susceptible to occasional hurricane activity. Hurricane Odile (Cat 4), in 2014, caused more than US$1 billion in damages. The most active period for Pacific tropical storms in this area is the same as the North Atlantic Hurricane Season (approximately June 1 – Oct 31).

Entrance Notes and Cautions:

It is not advisable to approach Marina Cabo San Lucas early mornings on weekends as a large sports-fishing fleet will leave between 6 am and 9 am.

Following the impact of recent hurricanes, cruising boats heading south this winter should be aware of debris in the water, missing navigation marks, hurricane damage to docks and limited berth availability. Marina Puerto Los Cabos is much quieter than Cabo San Lucas. Facilities are in good condition, though there are only a couple of showers. Best to get a slip on the south side near the office, unless you want to dinghy across. Good restaurants are at the marina, on the north side of the marina, or in San Jose- about a mile walk or $15 taxi ride.

Marina Cabo San Lucas is now managed by a sailor-friendly guy who is trying to attract cruisers. They are very helpful. Rates in 11/15 are about $80/night for a 40 ft vessel.
