Description:

Puerto Morelos is a quiet, laid back type of place where traditional fishermen can make a living. Tourism, especially diving, is just developing but the town remains unspoilt by it.

It lies between Cancun and Playa del Carmen and is a pleasant stop on the way to Isla Mujeres.

Entrance Notes and Cautions:

There is a clearly marked channel through the reef to the ferry dock area and the town quay, which is 0.8 km (half a mile) north of the dock.

Position:

20° 49.61’N, 86° 53.39’W (marina entrance)

As of Dec 18 2015, after talking to the marina officials, there are no more mooring balls available. They were taken off for the expansion of a new project. The marina is still there doing well and open for business as usual.

When clearing in or out at Puerto Morelos (Marina El Cid) a 24-hour notice is required by Immigration and Customs. You cannot call in advance to inform them as the marina requires you to be present when making the request. You will be required to stay in the Marina until all of the officials have cleared you in. If you are coming from the south, expect to be boarded and searched by customs.

Five agents and a K-9 searched my vessel. (I am a male, single handing, and I came from Guatemala so, no surprise since I came from a known narco route and fit the profile). None of my meat or food was confiscated as others have reported. The agent and personnel at Marina El Cid were quite helpful.
