Reggio di Calabria - General Info

Description:

Reggio di Calabria lies at the southern tip of the Italian peninsula on the eastern shore of the Strait of Messina.

This is a commercial harbor and busy with ferries to and from Sicily. Although this is the biggest port in this area, it is not the most attractive port. It suffered a severe earthquake in 1980.

Take note of the tides when planning to enter this harbor as the streams between Sicily and the mainland can be strong and can cause quite heavy seas. Another hazard to be aware of is the number of pots and fishing lines laid to the south of the harbor. This makes does not make a night approach advisable.

Position:

38°07.8’N,15°38.92’E (harbor entrance)

We have just had a bad experience with the Regio Calabria Coast Guard. We arrived in mainland Italy after cruising the Northern coast of Sicily for a couple of weeks. We anchored off the beach at Scilla and I went ashore to buy bread. On returning to the vessel my wife informed me that the Coast Guard had been and taken or passports and ships papers. They returned a short time later and issued us a €344 euro fine. After considerable effort to decipher the reason, we determined that it was for anchoring to close to the beach. No warning was given. We anchored at a place marked on our Navionics charts as ‘recommended anchorage’. This section of the Italian Coastline is NOT RECOMMENDED by us!
