Vibo Marina – safe harbour, hospitable marina with perfect service

If you approach Lamezia Airport by plane from the north, you will see the Lipari Islands in the blue sea when the weather is fine, and shortly before landing you will see the wide gulf of Sant Eufemia. Those who don’t know the picturesque coast of Tropea (Costa degli Dei) at the Tyrrhenian Sea will certainly be impressed.
But above all we were impressed by the safe harbour in Vibo Marina, when we saw the fortifications in search of our next home for our SY Gatto as well as the bases of the Guardia Costiera, Guardia Finanza, a fishing fleet (Mar del Pesca) and excursion ships to the Lipari Islands. Here, in a strategic position, in the west Stromboli (40 nm) and Panarea (50 nm), in the north Cetraro (45 nm) followed by the Cilento, in the south the Strait of Messina (45 nm) is perfectly safely walled harbour , especially in winter when the northwest wind or the Scirocco storms.

But the real surprise is the Marina Stell del Süd (www.marinastelladelsud.com), within the harbour basin with its branched pontile with electricity/water and sufficient water depth, which already Rod Heikell (Rod Heikell, Italian Waters Pilot) noticed positively. A family business with attached Boatyard and all kinds of specialized high-quality service enterprises, which are coordinated by the Marina management (Italian, English) on request and in time. and whose execution is “perfetto”. The predominantly Italian guests at the xx places know this already for a long time, but in the meantime also some German-language Stammlieger arrived, which estimate the cleanliness, the Marinero Service and the 24 h video monitoring likewise, like the fact that in this place over the whole year humans live, who estimate the daily market, the supermarkets and delicatessen shops as well as the good restaurant selection in all price ranges – all only few minutes by foot from the Marina. No comparison with Tropea a few miles further south, where berths are also considerably more expensive; Tropea, like the other towns, is ideally reached by the Tropea Express, a regular train service on the coast for 10 cents/km. Apropos, the airport Lamezia can of course also be reached by train and bus, but the marina gladly arranges a transfer for the half an hour drive.

We will still have our home port here for a while, as some yachts already do sail from here around Sicily, with a side trip to Tunisia, we can sail to Malta and back, or spend the summer in the Ionian Sea of Greece; in the winter and for the maintenance work in spring one gets back to this wonderful place at the latest.
