Where is Labuan Bajo?

Labuan Bajo is located at the western end of the island of Flores in the East Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia.  What was once a small fishing village has flourished to become the busy gateway to the Komodo National Park along with many other exotic destinations in East Nusa Tenggara.

Entrance Notes and Cautions for Labuan Bajo:

There is a channel which separates the town from Bajo Island and both north and south approaches are safe.  However, the northern channel is narrower so more attention is required.  This is a busy anchorage with hundreds of boats of all shapes and sizes accessing and using this area.  Recommended only for a short stop if provisioning or refuelling to visit the nearby Komodo National Park.

Cruiser Highlights for Labuan Bajo:

Due to the growing popularity of the area for visitors to the Komodo National Park, most things that a cruising yacht requires can be found here – small repairs, fuel, water and local provisions.

Komodo National Park

July 2024:  Park officials have advised that the Komodo National Park will be closed to tourists in 2025, but a date for the closure has yet to be finalised.  See this news item for more information.

The Komodo National Park was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991 and is home to some of the world’s most fascinating wildlife.  The park consists of Komodo Island, Rinca Island, Padar Island as well as many other smaller islands.  Yachts intending to visit this area should ensure they are aware of anchoring rules and guidance for divers/snorkelers.  Please refer to the Guidelines document below.

The Batu Bolong dive site is completely off limit to snorkelers and diving is only permitted from boats that are registered with the National Park authorities and have pre-registered and booked their diving slots.

Taka Makassar/Manta Point will also be off limits to non registered boats under the same Carrying Capacity scheme being run by the National Park.
