Where is Honokohau?

Honokohau harbor is in the region of Kailua-Kona, mid-way down the west coast of the big island.

It is the safest harbor on the island as it was blasted out of solid rock.

The harbor is located adjacent to the Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park and is 3 miles from the nearest town Kona.

Cruiser Highlights:

Marina, DLNR visitor berths, fresh water, fuel (the only fuel berth on the big island), toilets and showers, chandlery, repair facilities and a dry dock. There is no electricity on the dock here.

Position:

19°40.14’N, 156°01.68’W (harbor entrance)

Posted on behalf of Todd Thompson, SY Elcano

I am just back from a voyage from Hawaii through the Aleutians to Kodiak, Alaska on my 60’ sailboat Elcano.
I would like to pass on information about Gentry’s boatyard in Kona, Hawaii on the island of Hawaii:
The yard has a travel lift and basic land storage available. The adjacent marina there is run by the city and has limited space. All boat work at Gentry’s is done by independent contractors. I found Captain Ron Clark (phone 808.989.5500) particularly helpful in arranging a variety of boat work including painting, fiberglass repair, welding, and some other repairs. The work was well done, Ron is a pleasure to work with and helpful sorting out who is best to work with.
