Where is Nuuk?
Nuuk is the capital, the largest city of Greenland and the seat of government for the Sermersooq municipality. It is however probably one of the smallest capital cities in the world by population.
It is located at the mouth of the Nuup Kangerlua (Danish: Godthåbsfjorden) inlet on the west coast of Greenland, about 240 kilometers (150 miles) south of the Arctic Circle and is open all year.
The old city name was Godthåb (“Good Hope”) in Danish, although since 1979, when home rule was granted to Greenland, the official name of the city has been Nuuk, its Greenlandic name.
Cruiser Highlights for Nuuk:
The town centre is a 20 minute walk up the hill from the harbor and left at the roundabout. Everything is available in Nuuk, three different supermarkets, even a mall with everything you can dream of at European quality.
Position – harbour entrance:
64° 09.65’N, 51° 43.50’W

Victor Wejer – OCC Port Officer – reports 19/07/2024:
Please note, major Greenland harbour NUUK is out of bounds and is not accepting any sail boats to
either moor or anchor due to overcrowding.
Some small bays around are available but with no any kind of access, facilities or service.
As of 2025 Nuuk harbour Master announced that only passenger Cruising Ships will enter its harbour.
Its harbour expansion planned is not expressed yet. The rest of Greenland is free for anyone to enter.
Every repairs are possible in Nuuk, but with higher prices than in Europe or Americas. Nuuk shipyard is renown to be extremely expensive.
There is always the possibility to lift up a boat at the shipyard (the slipway is reserved for large commercial ships) but the cost could again turn out to be high.
Estimates are just for an indication and you can end up to pay 3 times the said price. There are various cranes up to 110t. Many repairs possible but you have to look for individuals to help you, the situation change from one year to another.
A new shop opened with many boat parts as well as new engines, etc. and is located at the fuel dock.
