Where is Vonitsa?

Vonitsa is a small coastal town with a harbour and a town quay, located on the Greek mainland on the southern coast of the Gulf of Amvrakikos. Conveniently is is just 10 kilometers east of Aktion, the international airport of Preveza (Parga) and Lefkas (i.e. 20 minutes from Lefkas town and Preveza town). While the quayside has an array of bars and tavernas, there is little else of interest in Vonitsa. Unfortunately the fortress is very overgrown and difficult to explore, only really worth the visit if you really like that sort of thing or want the exercise. The surrounding villages are nice to visit if you have a car or a scooter.
The old harbour is currently undergoing major works to expand, so berthing options are limited at this time (summer 2024).
Position:
38° 58.21 N, 20° 58.9 E (entrance from the coast of the Ambracian Gulf)

Anchorage on the east side of Nisis Koukounitsa – this is a large anchorage with depths in the middle of the bay at 6-8 metres, reducing to 3 metres closer to shore. It provides shelter from all points except north. However, holding is patchy and it can take a few attempts to get the anchor to set in mud. Once dug in then holding is OK. Holding may be better closer to Nisis Koukounitsa itself. We anchored in 6.5m with 60m chain in a F7. Dinghy can go ashore at the landward end of the causeway linking the island, and it is a short walk into Vonitsa Town, dinghy round the island to the town quay. Plenty of cafes and restaurants, and a fine castle.
