Where is Ua Pou?

The Marquesas Islands lie to the northeast of Tahiti.  Ua Pou is the third largest and probably the most scenic.  Volcanic spires and needles create the iconic snaggle tooth profile of Ua Pou which is strikingly visible from miles away on a clear day and has been likened to a Disneyland castle or a palace with minarets.

Entrance Notes and Cautions for Ua Pou:

There is swell in most bays, including the main villages of Hakahau and Hakahetau.  Stay clear of the dock area if you don’t know the supply ship schedule.

Cruiser Highlights for Ua Pou:

A beautiful waterfall that is easy to access and delicious handmade chocolate from Manfred the chocolatier who grows his own cacao.  The Biennial Marquesas Islands Arts Festival sees more than 1000 artists from the islands participate in a three day celebration of  Marquesan culture.  Contact Tahiti Tourism for dates.  Lots of lovely little shops selling Marquesan crafts.

Position – Hakahau harbor:

09° 21.40’S, 140° 02.89’W

    Ua Pou

There are 2 catamarans that seem to be permanently moored in the bay on buoys and a monohull that was anchored ( with a stern anchor ) and looked like he’d been there a while. We didn’t put a stern anchor out and we were behind the wall so not so much swell. We got our main anchor wrapped around a lump of metal and it took 2 hours to untangle it with diving gear. So be aware of possible debris. There were other cruising boats here and no one had a stern anchor out.

We put our dinghy on the main dock, but you will want to use an anchor because there are local boats moored and the dinghy will drift under their lines if you don’t.

We found 4 different supermarkets, all quite well stocked.

The restaurant seemed to be closed ( permanently?) . Follow the main road from the anchorage and walk around to the left before you get to the community building and there is a pizza takeaway place and next door a cafe that has WiFi. If you walk to the community building there is a post office and 2 ATM’s.

There are a number of recycling bins, the nearest seems to be at the community centre car park.
