Rapa - General Info
Where is Rapa Iti (Oparo)?
Rapa Iti is one of the most remote islands in French Polynesia. It has a well-protected central bay, surrounded by a ring of relatively high mountains. The whole island appears to be the peak of a sinking volcano.
Although sometimes considered part of the Austral Islands, Rapa Iti and the Bass Islands have a different geological, linguistic and cultural history.
Entrance Notes and Cautions for Rapa Iti:
The anchorage inside the main bay of Rapa is protected from swell, but beware of gusts that howl down from the mountains.
Cruiser Highlights for Rapa Iti:
The main town, Ahuréi (or Ha’uréi), lies on the southern shore of that bay, which is called the Baie d’Ahuréi. This is where you’ll find the primary school, medical centre, post office and town hall. Not many yachts visit here so those that do get an extra-warm welcome.
Position – approach to Ahurei:
27° 36.54’S, 144° 17.99’W
