Where is Moerai?

Rurutu is the northernmost of the Austral islands and the village of Moerai lies on its NE side. The island is becoming well known for the number of whales which can be seen around its shores. Most of the 2,000 inhabitants of the island are fishermen and farmers and its Polynesian culture has remained largely unchanged.

Entrance Notes and Cautions for Moerai:

The harbour on the NE side near the main village of Moerai is spacious and deep (5-6metres) but the entrance is only 20 metres wide with rocks on both sides so is only used by small local fishing boats and the occasional visiting yacht.

Cruiser Highlights for Moerai:

The island is a combination of rugged coral cliffs, flat coastal areas and long white sandy beaches which make for a beautiful tropical island mix.  Whale watching is becoming a popular tourism activity and local boats will take you to “swim with the whales”.

Position – Moerai harbor entrance:

22° 26.96’S, 151° 20.40’W
