Description:

Located 51NM from Isla Beata.

Although this harbor is commercial and fringed with industrial activity, it is a good place for provisioning. It is also a convenient spot from which to visit Lake Enriquillo, one of the few saltwater lakes in the world inhabited by crocodiles.

Entrance Notes and Cautions:

There are buoys marking the entrance channel to the starboard of a reef which extends offshore. The safest approach is from the east northeast. Once past the entrance buoys, there are numerous marker buoys leading the way to the anchorage basin. Take extra caution at night since many of the buoys are unlit. This is a straightforward entrance with a good echo sounder.

A lee shore in the prevailing easterlies.

Cruiser Highlights:

Club Nautico is a restaurant with a tiny harbour and lots of locals.  If anchoring in the bay, it is appreciated if you have a meal (lunch or dinner) here.  Food is good in both price and quality and the manager will ensure that the immigration officer is present when you arrive, who may also double as your taxi-driver.

Position:

18°12.21’N, 71°05.11’W (approaches to Barahona)

    Data Entry2 says:

We anchored at the little harbour in front of the little yacht club (that’s really stretching the term). The anchorage was calm, and the holding was good.

You can dinghy to the govt pier from there and access the town. If your dinghy to the yacht club be prepared to pay 10USD. Although we did at one point in our two-day stay go to the marina to move fuel via jugs to the boats and had ‘presidents’ in between. other than that there is really no need to go to the yacht club.

Look for a guy named Fernando. He was a great guide. He took us all over the town, to markets, cell phone stores, restaurants, and negotiated for diesel to be brought to the yacht club for us. He was great and made us feel safe in a very busy downtown environment. Be prepared to be patient on your way out of this town to other stops.
