Description:

Valdivia is named after its founder the Spanish Conquistador Pedro de Valdivia and is located at the confluence of three rivers – the Calle-Calle, Valdivia, and Cau-Cau.  It lies about 15 km (nine miles) east of the coastal towns of Corral and Niebla and approximately 500NM south of Santiago.

Entrance Notes and Cautions:

In 1960 Valdivia was severely damaged by the Great Chilean earthquake.  At magnitude 9.5 it was one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded. Debris and destroyed buildings can still be seen in some areas. In addition, land subsidence and sediments have resulted in complex navigation challenges on the local rivers and in some areas, ruins of buildings are visible from the water.

Position:

39° 49.3’S, 73° 26.4’W

Update May 2015 by SY Anna Caroline:

Alwoplast is indeed an excellent boatyard. They are very busy with new boats and have little or no time for cruisers. The sail loft is no longer there. http://www.Sailschile.cl is a good alternative. They are based in Santiago, but the pickup and delivery of sails are easily arranged. Spanish speaking only.

Club de Yates is doubling the Estancilla docks now. We find that this location is better for boats larger than 35 feet and/or with more than 2 mtr. draught. The marina in Valdivia itself is nice but on a lee shore. Larger boats are moored outside on a hammerhead, subject to waves and wind.

The bus service from Estancilla to the town is very frequent: about every 5-10 minutes a bus passes. The trip is only 8-10 minutes, contrary to what is indicated above. Both locations of Club de Yates have wifi. If Alwoplast cannot help with repairs: they are happy to give information. There are local suppliers also.
