Where is Melbourne?

Melbourne is the capital of the southern Australian state of Victoria and lies at the northern end of Port Philip Bay, which is very large – 20nm wide and 40nm long, but with an entrance that is only 2nm wide.

The busy commercial Port of Melbourne lies to the east of the Yarra River which leads into the heart of the city.

Entrance Notes and Cautions for Melbourne:

The tidal flow through the Port Phillip Heads is very strong and creates large pressure waves on both incoming and outgoing tides.  The best time to enter is on slack water and with an incoming tide and exit at slack water and on an outgoing tide.  It is a notorious crossing and a number of boats have sunk over the years, including a Pilot vessel.  Be wary of commerical shipping and ferries as there is a well defined shipping channel.  Outside of the shipping channel there are many shallow sandbanks along the southern part of the bay from Sorrento to Mornington so keep an eye on charts for the area.

Cruiser Highlights for Melbourne:

Work your way around the east coast of the bay exploring the towns and suburbs, most of which have marinas or anchorages for boats.  Sorrento is a tourist hot spot in summer, Mornington has a nice sheltered anchorage except in westerly winds and is a great place to stay for a few days and explore the wineries of the Mornington Peninsula.  Excellent provisioning, restaurants and shops within walking distance of the marina.  Melbourne itself has a very friendly marina in the heart of the city on the Yarra River and with foreign sailors few and far between, you are assured of a warm welcome.
