Where is Thursday Island?

Thursday Island (also known locally as just ‘T.I’) and Horn Island are located off the very northern tip of Queensland in the Torres Strait (between the Australian Mainland and Papua New Guinea). Whilst Horn Island is the larger of the two, TI is more heavily populated and has more services, including Customs and AQIS.

Entrance Notes or Cautions for Thursday Island:

TI is a small and friendly place to stop, but it can be very windy here and anchoring is the only option. Tides can be very strong through here as well so it is advisable to contact the officials for advise on where to anchor.  They will most likely direct you to Horn Island as conditions can get rough at Thursday Island.

Larger vessels need to come between Goods & Friday Islands and follow the shipping lane.

Cruiser Highlights for Thursday Island:

If this is your first Port of Entry for Australia, expect a friendly welcome and to be hailed by radio from the Australian Border Force aircraft.  Fuel and some provisions available.  Friendly locals who will arrange a tour of the island for you.  Read this useful report which was provided by regular Noonsite contributors Maria and Allen Wadsworth who visited in June 2024.
