Starting October 1, 2024, all visitors to Zanzibar (excluding residents) must have mandatory Inbound Travel Insurance from Zanzibar Insurance Corporation.

Announcing the initiative, Dr. Saada Mkuya Salum, the Finance and Planning State Minister in the Zanzibar President’s Office said setting up the insurance arrangement was expected to increase the number of tourists and thus improve revenue collection.

Ensuring Safety and Well-Being for Foreigners

“The requirement is being implemented to ensure the safety and well-being of all foreigners and mitigate any possible risk pertaining to their travel to the island,” said Dr. Saada Mkuya Salum.  “It is essential that all foreigners make the necessary arrangements to obtain insurance before embarking on their journey to Zanzibar.”

Up to a three-month (92 day) insurance policy will cost US$44 and is designed to provide immediate support in case of medical and other emergency situations. The Government advises all travelers to make sure they comply with this new requirement to avoid any travel disruptions at entry.

The Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar government issued an official statement outlining the main reasons behind the introduction of the mandatory insurance policy, which can be read below.
