NOAA’s forecast at 1000 AM CDT today puts the center of Hurricane Delta near latitude 20.0 North, longitude 85.7 West and moving west-northwest at close to 16 mph (26 km/h).

Delta is expected to make landfall on the Yucatan peninsula this morning with maximum sustained winds close to 120 mph (195 km/h) with higher gusts.

Delta is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some weakening in wind speed is likely when Delta moves over the Yucatan peninsula, re-strengthening as it moves over the southern Gulf of Mexico Wednesday night and Thursday.

A life-threatening storm surge will raise water levels in areas of onshore winds by as much as 8 to 12 ft above normal tide levels along the northern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula from Cabo Catoche to Progresso, and 6 to 8 ft above normal tide levels along the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula from Tulum to Cabo Catoche. Near the coast, the surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves. There is also a risk of flash flooding.

The Yucatan Peninsula will experience extremely dangerous hurricane conditions during the next several hours and tropical storm conditions are expected in Cuba overnight in the warning area.
