Oscar Upgraded to Category One Hurricane
Tropical Storm Oscar formed on Saturday morning October 19 and was quickly upgraded to a Category 1 hurricane, resulting in warnings being issued for the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Southeastern Bahamas as well as a number of Cuba’s southeastern provinces.
Oscar was the eighth named storm to form since September 24, 2024 breaking the record for the most named storms forming between September 24 and October 19, set in 1950 according to Phil Klotzbach, a senior research scientist at Colorado State Universty.
The USA’s National Weather Service said Oscar could also bring indirect impacts to East Coast beaches from a long period swell in the next week.
Tropical Storm Nadine makes landfall in Belize
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Nadine made landfall in Belize on Saturday as well with maximum sustained winds of 50mph and heavy rainfall according to the National Hurricane Center.
Tropical storm warnings were issued for the coast of Belize, the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, with flash flooding expected across parts of southern Mexico, northern Guatemala and northern Belize.
As Nadine moves inland it was expected to weaken and dissipate over southeastern Mexico.
First Named Storm for North Atlantic Storm Season
Meanwhile across the Atlantic, Ashley has become the first named storm of the North Atlantic Storm Season. The North Atlantic has had some active storms this month and more are coming according to the Severe Weather Europe website.
The last significant storm that affected Europe was ex-hurricane Kirk, which brought significant winds to Galicia, northwest Spain and western France.
The meteorological services of Ireland and the UK named storm Ashley as a potentially severe windstorm that will blast toward Ireland and Scotland.
