New Zealand: Earthquakes Trigger Tsunami Alerts on the North Island
New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a Tsunami Warning for the East Coast of the North Island following three significant earthquakes early Friday morning March 5.

NEMA has issued the warning to people in the East Coast of the North Island from the Bay of Islands to Whangārei, from Matata to Tolaga Bay including Whakatāne and Opotiki and Great Barrier Island to move immediately to higher ground.
It said strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges could affect these areas.
The first earthquake of 7.1 magnitude struck off the coast of Gisborne which was followed by two significant earthquakes of 8.0 and 7.4 near the Kermadec Islands.
Earlier in the morning the earthquake off the coast of Gisborne also triggered a tsunami and marine warning but this was later cancelled and people were allowed to return home.
There have been no reports of property damage or injuries at this stage.
