Hurricane Elsa, the first named Hurricane of the Atlantic Season, has left a path of destruction across the Caribbean, eastern United States and eastern Canada.

Elsa started out as a Tropical Storm in the Caribbean’s Windward Islands, affecting Barbados, Martinique, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Guadeloupe.

As it tracked its way across the Caribbean it battered parts of the Dominican Republic and Haiti with heavy rains and strong winds before intensifying into a Category One Hurricane and crossing Cuba and the southern US state of Florida.

After weakening back into the Tropical Storm category, Elsa moved quickly up the east coast of the United States, soaking New York City, New England, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and other eastern states. 

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Elsa was no longer considered a tropical storm over the weekend but still warned of heavy rainfall and gusty winds before the storm was expected to blow into the Bay of Fundy and eastern Canada.

Authorities said one person was killed in Florida when a tree fell and struck two cars and in South Carolina, a Coast Guard Air Station Savannah crew rescued a family that became stranded on Otter Island after their boat drifted off the beach.

On its way through the Caribbean, Elsa battered the southern coasts of Haiti and the Dominican Republic as well as causing widespread damage in Barbados, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.  Two deaths were reported in the Dominican Republic and one in St. Lucia.

Brian McNoldy, a hurricane researcher at the University of Miami said Elsa was the earliest fifth-named storm on record.
