March 2014 – Belem (Northern Coast of Brazil)
A week ago I received alarming information about an assault and robbery in Belem, Brazil upon s/y Scalawag. The boat is 37ft Irwin 37 Russian flag, the crew of two young people – Yulia and Anton. I met them in November in Las Palmas and they left in January for Brazil.
After the Atlantic crossing, they arrived in Belem planning to continue to the Carribean. On the way out from Belem, they had to stop at the nearest town on the river due to engine failure. This was at Mosqueiro Island (Position S01 10.4097, W048 28.4852) and occurred on the 26th March 2014. Soon after anchoring robbers boarded the boat and stripped off all the equipment pointing guns at the crew. They took everything including the tools and the engine oil.
For sure I know the crew was not harmed and they reported the incident to the local police.
This information was confirmed today by the skipper of Scalawag, Anton Bushuev in a private e-mail.
