Atlantic Hurricane Season 2022: Tropical Storm Nicole Intensifies

Tropical Storm Nicole, which is currently spinning northeast of the Bahamas, is expected to intensify and strike Florida as a hurricane late on Wednesday this week according to the National Hurricane Center.

The NHC said in an Advisory that hurricane conditions are possible in southeast to east-central Florida beginning late Wednesday or Wednesday night, while tropical storm conditions can be expected beginning Wednesday morning across a larger area of Florida and Georgia.

“A dangerous storm surge is expected along much of the east coast of Florida and portions of coastal Georgia where a Storm Surge Warning is in effect,” the NHC said.  “The storm surge will be accompanied by large and damaging waves.”

The storm’s large size, combined with an area of high pressure to its north is likely to make it a far-reaching, high-impact event with damaging coastal flooding, dangerous winds and heavy rainfall across a broad region.  Because Nicole is evolving from a hybrid system into a tropical storm and eventually a hurricane, it has a large wind field, which will come into play with the storm’s impacts in Florida and further up the southeastern coast.

The NHC Advisory said not to focus on the exact track of Nicole since it was expected to be a large storm with hazards extending well to the north of the center, outside of the forecast cone.  The hazards were likely to affect much of the Florida peninsula and portions of the southeast United States.

Busy End to the Official Hurricane Season

November is the final month of the official hurricane season and it started with Tropical Storm Martin forming in the central North Atlantic on Tuesday November 1, becoming the 13th named storm of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season and the seventh hurricane of the season before turning into a powerful post-tropical cyclone.  On the same day Hurricane Lisa made landfall in Belize as a strong Category 1 storm before crossing northern Guatemala and moving into southeastern Mexico.

The simultaneous development of Hurricane Martin and Hurricane Lisa in the Atlantic was only the third time since 1900 that there have been two November hurricanes at the same time.  This happened previously in 1932 and 2001.
