Located near the cape of Trafalgar, Barbate has been a fishing and sailing village since the first Phoenician, Greek and Roman settlers established themselves at the mouth of its river and started up the first salting industries. Later and during the rule of the Dukes of Medina Sidonia, tuna fishing was developed by means of the traditional system of this area known as almadraba. In Barbate, recommended visits include the nearby Almenar towers, Tajo and Meca and, above all,the Trafalgar lighthouse. Other interesting routes are to visit the pine groves anbd the cliffs of the La Brena nature reserve or to go towards Zahara to contemplate the ruins of the old 16th-century fortress, base of the tuna traps for tuna fishing.
